Imagine a world in which every young person in Africa attends a school that truly sets them up for success in the 21st century. Imagine that this school demands excellence, equips students with globally competitive science and technology skills, gives students great autonomy, and builds the character and growth mindset that will shape the rest of their lives. Imagine that this school is not in one town, in one country, but in every town, in every country. This is what Spire imagines, and we want you to help make it happen.
Spire is looking for a superstar educator to help us build the curriculum that will power that vision. You will drive the design of schedules and lessons that go far beyond the core standards, developing ways for all students to build the critical thinking, creativity, and character they need to thrive. You will also have a particular focus on helping students excel in technology and science skills, including through rigorous hands-on projects and blended learning. This is an opportunity to create a transformative school model with the future of Africa’s youth at stake.
ABOUT SPIRE
If we reinvented secondary education for 21st century, what would it look like? We think it would combine a focus on building independent critical thinking, learning through solving real–world problems, and deep investment in developing teachers who engage rather than lecture students. It would blend a curated set of the best online learning resources globally with outstanding in-person instruction.
We are launching a new venture to reimagine secondary education in the developing world. Beginning with our first school launch in Nairobi this coming January, we aim to build the first scaled network of high-quality, affordable secondary schools in sub-Saharan Africa. Our venture will be structured as a social enterprise to enable us to attract the investment that will be needed to reach tens of thousands of students in the next 5-10 years.
Africa has the fastest-growing youth population in the world and a rapidly expanding middle class, but its education systems are not ready to unleash what could be the transformative generation of talent that permanently changes the face of the continent. We aspire to be among the first to show at scale that this is possible.
Our Team Culture Is Designed To Reinforce Our Vision
- We model the growth mindset we want our students to embody: you are challenged every day and, as a result, you grow more than at any other point in your life
- We pursue excellence in every detail and do whatever it takes to produce great work quickly
- We are radically open: we share tough messages and our own vulnerabilities because doing so helps us grow
- We put our students before our team, and our team before ourselves
- We bring infectious energy, enthusiasm and fun to everything we do because joy fuels the hardest work and learning
ABOUT THE ROLE

- Write strong, creative lessons that lead to high student engagement and practice of the subject
- Lead the development of STEM curricula, by incorporating best practices from around the world
- Analyze data on the effectiveness of our curricula and constantly identify ways to modify lessons to improve outcomes
ABOUT YOU
- You have 2+ years of teaching experience in a rigorous, high-expectations setting
- You have a track record of developing creative and rigorous curriculum that has led to distinctive learning outcomes and can demonstrate this through example products and references
- You have distinctive experience and interest in technology (e.g., coding) and the sciences
- You have a desire to further develop your curriculum development skills and apply them to transform the lives of African youth
- You have strong writing skills and are able to use those to create lessons that will help people learn it while being engaged and interested
- You are driven by data and can use data from student assessments to strengthen lessons and spiral in key skills
